Founded in 1982 with a single salvage yard in California, this Fortune 500 company has grown into a global leader and the premier source for online vehicle auctions. The company’s innovative technology and online auction platform link Buyers and Sellers around the world, specializing in the resale and remarketing of used, wholesale, and salvage vehicles for a variety of sellers. This industry leader has 10,000 employees, operates in more than 200 locations spanning 11 countries, and has more than 175,000 vehicles up for auction every day. Like many others, adopting the cloud was a necessity for accelerating business growth.
“ As the world moves towards cloud, more and more user data is starting to live in cloud. Microsoft 365 is our biggest app in terms of where data lives. So we wanted to make sure those access requests are secure.”
Microsoft 365 has become the most critical business application for this Fortune 500 company, in fact it’s where most of their employee data lives. So, securing access to the business app was key. In the past, employees could access the application directly. However, even with credentials and MFA in place, this method of access was not a secure option.
When COVID-19 hit, it exacerbated the need for a service where, if users were home, at the office, at a café, the airport, or checking emails on the go - access was always secure. Not only did the Fortune 500 company need to find a way to stay ahead of security attacks, and obtain deeper visibility into what users were accessing – but they needed to deliver a better experience while doing it. So, they set out to find a single platform that could help them.
“ We actually started our zero trust journey around two and a half years ago. The goal was to protect our user data, reduce the attack surface, and make it easier for our employees to connect to resources in a secure fashion.”
The team knew that each day threat actors were attempting to trick people into stealing usernames and passwords. So, their first step to protecting their business was applying zero trust access controls for Microsoft 365.
The move to a security service edge (SSE) platform was part of an initial directive led by their CISO at the time. They weren’t thrilled with their incumbent solution and preferred to work with an innovative company they could become design partners with. In 2019, the company discovered Atmos by Axis.

The Fortune 500 company saw immediate benefits when they made the switch to Atmos. The ability to easily integrate with Okta, deploy seamlessly with Atmos’ 100% cloud architecture, simple to use Atmos Agent, and deliver a truly seamless user experience - was incredible. That made the partnership a great investment.
The team quickly expanded from their SaaS applications to private applications as well once they realized the benefits of using Atmos as a replacement for their VPN service. Which, at the time, was used for both employees and third parties.
“ I had a lot of services and servers that required VPN for access. Now I don’t even remember the last time I logged into the VPN, because I use Atmos. I still have all the access to the apps I need though. So, that kind of easiness really helps.”
The company is excited to begin leveraging Atmos for the thousands of third-party contractors they work with each day. Instead of giving them VPN access and requiring them to deploy an agent on their device, partners will simply connect through Atmos using Atmos Air (agentless feature). This allows admins to provide partners with least-privileged access to the two or three resources partners need, versus giving them VPN access where they can scan the entire corporate network.
Atmos’ ability to support multiple tenants was a huge win for this use case. Their teams can easily set up multiple tenets within their environment. They have a Dev tenant for implementing changes to ensure no issues would be created, a full Production tenant, and a tenant designed specifically for their partners. For their third-party users the team will be using Atmos IDP, which is included for free within their Atmos subscription, and will avoid having to pay for an additional identity provider.
Today, the Fortune 500 company uses Atmos to secure access for almost all 10,000 employees and soon their partner ecosystem as well.

Their own enterprise evolution has taught them a lot about why companies must start thinking differently when securing access to business resources. “ Some people think of these security service edge (SSE) services as only VPN replacement or for a few SaaS applications, but there is much more to it than that. But the long-term vision for Atmos is putting everything behind the platform to help us monitor things easily. If someone is trying to access and is not coming from one of Axis IPs – that’s something worth looking at. If someone tries to log in ten times, that can be a serious incident.
